Here in the popular fishing town of Whitstable, Kent, there has been rumbling a very important issue: how to develop and secure the commercial future of our ancient harbour.
Over the last few years, we've had public consultations (which proved little more than a "choice" of three inappropriate developments including a huge pub and a supermarket), arguments and clashes, but very little consensus or progress.
But a recent headline from Whitstable Times really made me sit up and take notice once again: "Councillors left out in the cold - town representatives not included in review of harbour".
I'd like to know why this is so? According to Whitstable Times NONE of the town's 12 councillors is included on a panel that will discuss how Whitstable Harbour's port is managed and run. Instead it will be headed up by Councillor Heather Taylor, from inland Sturry.
Canterbury City Council (that own the port) Chief Executive, Colin Carmichael, believes that members from OUTSIDE Whitstable could offer a more independent view.
This to me is very confusing, and very worrying. Would it not have been more sensible to have had people in on the consultation that UNDERSTAND Whitstable? How can we as residents of this town be sure our concerns and interests are adequately addressed by people who may not have the complete insight required?
Surely the panel should be a mix of people - including councillors that represent the people of this town.
I want to know what others think on this issue - and would like to get some strong evidence from Canterbury City Council on why this decision is best for Whitstable. I also want to hear from Whitstable Councillors on how they are challenging this decision.
I'll be forwarding this request to CCC, and Whitstable Councillors and ask them to add their responses here.
